Last fall, the UBC put into writing that no student should expect anything more than freedom of expression at the UBC. Despite it being the “first pillar” of their institution, they’ll smash the marble to dust if it meant not having to admit to infringing on a student’s academic freedom.
UBC claims “excellence” is almost as important as “academic freedom”. But they don’t think their MFA program needs to be repeatable or free from academic freedom violations. I’d argue they value excellence exactly as much as academic freedom.
